An educational, environmental art project which started in April 2014. Therese and Marta worked together to produce a body of works which would bring to light the Powerful, Masked, Barking, Sooty and Grass owls which inhabit the Hunter and Central Coast Regions.
These birds are threatened by clearing and urbanization. As nocturnal raptors they are not easily identifiable or distinguishable. With this in mind these two artists set about creating a body of work that would capture the imagination and interest of the community and spread the word of the owls plight far afield.
Research with the Sydney museum, Taronga Park Zoo, talks with Birding Australia, local twitchers and authorities, Wildlife Arc, Reptile Park, Dr. Beth Mott, the CSIRO sounds bank saw the images develop and the work progress. Drawings, sketches, prints, paintings, mixed media , huge fabric panels and sculptural masks in resin are all part of this incredible project.
Here below are some of the initial images more will be added to this site in due course.
Currently on display at The Art House Margaret Street, Wyong and travelling to Cessnock Regional Gallery in March 2018.
Free Presentations saw community come and be informed by Dr. Beth Mott Coordinator of the Powerful Owl Project in Sydney, The artists talking about their journey and the process, Jacky Hunt from Wildlife Arc with her fascinating specimens of owl bodies, Kevin Gavi Duncan local Aboriginal elder, storyteller, musician, artist and educator and Sue Dawson and Linda Simon from Ngara Dhi Li the Aboriginal community organization. These presentations have resulted in widening the scope and reach of the educational and environmental components of this project .
