An opportunity to delve into the winged messengers of this fair Island and discover as much as possible about them and their ancestors, their habitats and vagaries.
An amazing place which tells of shipwrecks, calcite forests, sand, rugged coastline, sealers, extinct species, and currently a thriving dairy industry and some of the best cheese, cream in the universe and also one of the best golf courses around.
The island is 64 kilometres long and 27 kilometres wide, it has a population of 1600 people 700 of which live in and around Currie where the airport is. The rest are scattered all over the island. There are 26% of the population which rent.
The only way to get to the island is via small aircraft and therefore luggage weight is reduced. There is a school which caters for K-10 and another which has year nine students who visit from the mainland and the syllabus is heavily waited towards outdoor work. All sounds exciting and interesting.
There is a wonderful museum which I am hoping to really spend some time in with all sorts of information and history to discover. Luke Agati is the curator in charge so am looking forward to meeting him.
There is an active group of printmakers on the island some of which I have had the pleasure of being in contact with and and a wonderful Cultural Centre with a press yahooooo! I can feel a workshop coming on. Also an opportunity to mix with like minded creative and learn some things myself on the way.
There is not a lot of wi fi available so a lot of the details of the venture will be posted on my return. It is exciting to say the least and look forward to learning as much as I can whilst enjoying everything the island has to offer.
Birds feature heavily in a lot of my work and will do so once again as new body of work takes shape highlighting the birds of Tasmania and King Island.
